Loss Cards

The cost of using a loss card goes down as the game progresses. Figuring out the right time to play it is critical to your mission’s success. The largest cost is in number of actions you can take. The formula costs are:

#actions cost = (cycles remaining)/2

Cycles remaining = (number of cards in next cycle) – 1.

The value gained must be greater than this action cost.

For example, burning a card that gives 6 movement grants 3 actions of value if fully used. If played in the first hand cycle, this costs 4 actions (in a 10 card deck). In hand cycle 5 this costs 2 actions. You can improve this evaluation if this 6 movement gives you the ability to make an attack you’d otherwise not be able to make: granting an additional action of value.

Elemental Setup

This simple tip that is absolutely critical to playing Gloomhaven effectively. Plan ahead at least one round. You can always adjust as the battlefield changes. By planning ahead one action, you’ll be able to setup an element for your use next round.

Elemental Teamwork

Most characters are centered around a handful of elements, and sometimes these heroes generate elements they can’t use. Look for overlap when selecting characters or cards so that you can setup combo attacks with your fellow party members.

Role Synergy

There are many party roles to fill in Gloomhaven, such as the tank who operates as a designated damage receiver. Your character specializes through card/equipment selection, and natural predisposition (hps and maneuverability).

Chances are your mission will fail if everyone is playing a similar role.
